- I have had an Amiga 1000 with 2 hard drives, a Maxtor 120 I bought new
- with the SCSI board, and an 82 meg Quantum pull from a Mac. I had these
- 2 years before I owned an MSDOS machine. I now have a 486SLC thing and
- my 10 year old has a 486DX. My son's DOS box has gone through 2 hard
- drives, and mine has used up 3. That's the count of dead hard drives.
- The Amiga hasn't lost a sector yet. If a system only uses the hard
- drive to save and fetch programs and *normal* files, hard drives last
- almost forever. I have an 8088 box with its original Micropolis still
- working, after years of commercial work. It was probably used entirely
- under MSDOS. Windows and OS/2 will bang a drive to death by using it
- for virtual memory. That's why all the talk about backups. Real
- computers don't wear their hard drives out.
